4.0 stars out of 5 for this product A Reasonably Priced Entry-Level Telephone System On April 20, 2015, Mark F posted a blog. The fact that my iPhone 4s was becoming increasingly unreliable was one of the primary reasons I wanted to switch phones, apart from the fact that it was becoming increasingly unreliable, was to move off of T Mobile’s network, which is, in my opinion, godawful. I’d been considering switching to Verizon for years because of their extensive network coverage. Because I am a Straight Talk client, I am able to obtain any phone that is locked to any carrier and have it function with Straight Talk; all you need is their SIM card.

As a result, I joined the realm of entry-level phones that were not tied to a contract.

Some of the specs aren’t particularly eye-catching: A 4.5-inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, a 5-megapixel camera (plus a 2-megapixel front-facing camera), and video recording at 720p/30 frames per second.

It appears to be really snappy; applications load extremely quickly, and web sites even more quickly.

  1. I can’t wait to put it through its paces in my hometown, where T cell service is virtually non-existent, haha.
  2. Despite the fact that it is not real HD, the large screen is a huge boon for my text-weary fingers (the 4s was becoming increasingly unwieldy).
  3. The colors are quite vibrant.
  4. In intense sunshine, the phone is virtually impossible to read.
  5. I can listen to music for two hours straight at work and have it connected to wifi all day with light to moderate use (I’m typically too busy) and still have 60-70 percent battery life when I go home.
  6. Unless I was playing poker on it all day, I haven’t even gotten close to needing to charge it at night, save for one occasion.
  7. After dealing with Apple’s private nature for so long, the ability to extend RAM is really nice.

Currently, I’m using a 64GB Samsung Evo class 10 microSD card, and I haven’t had any issues with it.

It is also one of the few phones in this price range that is capable of supporting a 128GB SD card.

So we’ll see what happens on this front.

In all honesty, I seldom use my phone for any serious photography since I always have our trusty Canon Powershot G15 ready to go when I need to capture anything special.

The 2MP camera on the front of the device is actually rather good.

Although the screen has gorilla glass protection, it is not scratch resistant, hence a case is required for those like myself (on the way).

So far, I haven’t felt the need to root it or remove anything, which is odd given how often I use it.

It’s good to be back in action.

I believe Samsung done a terrific job in presenting this device as an entry-level handset to the market.

Well, this is by far the most stable Android phone I’ve ever used, and I’ve had a lot of them.

It just works, and it works quickly. Still rock-solid and snappy as ever. I’m still happy with it. I would absolutely suggest it to anyone seeking for a solid, entry-level phone that is not tied to a contract.

Samsung Galaxy Core Prime (Verizon Wireless) Review

However, while compact smartphones have all but departed from the showy flagship limelight, phones under 5 inches in screen size are still quite popular in the mid-range and entry-level device categories. When it comes to voice conversations, the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime on Verizon Wireless ($144; 8GB) is a good performer with a pleasant form factor. Unfortunately, limited internal storage and a large amount of bloatware make it difficult to use. If you only need to make phone calls and use a few apps, the Core Prime will suffice your needs perfectly.

  1. Design, display, and functionality are all important considerations.
  2. Both the capacitive Home button and the camera lens configuration are same, and both the metallic-looking frame and the durable polycarbonate construction are retained.
  3. It’s smaller and lighter than the Moto E (5.11 by 2.63 by 0.48 inches; 5.11 ounces), but it’s a little larger than the Droid Mini (5.11 by 2.63 by 0.48 inches; 5.11 ounces) (4.78 by 2.41 by 0.35 inches; 4.59 ounces).
  4. This year, our experts have evaluated 68 different products in the mobile phone category.
  5. (See how we do our tests.) Located on the right side, a volume rocker can be found on the left, a micro USB charging port can be located at the bottom, and a 3.5mm headphone jack can be found at the top of the device.
  6. The replaceable battery, SIM card slot, and microSD card slot are all accessible after removing the back panel; in our tests, the phone recognized a 200GB SanDisk card (available for $41.22 from Amazon UK) and a microSD card.
  7. Despite having a lesser resolution than the 1,280-by-720 Droid Mini and the 960-by-540 Moto E, it provides brilliant, rich colors and great viewing angles despite having a lower resolution than other devices.

Performance and Connectivity of the Network The Core Prime is powered by Verizon Wireless, which has consistently ranked as the best carrier in the US in our Fastest Mobile Networkstests for several years.

If you’re looking for greater versatility, the Moto E has a considerably larger selection of LTE bands to choose from.

The network connectivity at the PCMag test lab was less than stellar, with download speeds dipping to as low as 1Mbps in certain cases.

The quality of the voice is outstanding.

There is no cracking or static while using noise cancellation, and calls are clear.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 CPU running at 1.2GHz and 1GB of RAM, similar to that of the Moto E, power the Core Prime, as does the Moto E.

This puts it in the same ballpark as the Moto E, which had a score of 22,484.

The phone runs nicely, with the exception of an odd hitch when the RAM use limit is exceeded.

The battery life is adequate, lasting 4 hours and 45 minutes in our battery test, which involves streaming full-screen movie over LTE at maximum brightness and using the device’s Wi-Fi.

The performance of the camera is also acceptable.

The autofocus is a little sluggish to lock on, and there is occasionally noise or blurriness around the borders of the picture frame.

When it comes to taking selfies, the 2-megapixel front-facing camera will suffice, but it will be blurry.

The great majority of entry-level phones do not offer any more software upgrades, and it is possible that you will not receive any at all in the future.

See how we put cell phones through their paces.

A slew of Verizon applications are available, including Caller Name ID, Cloud, Message+, My Verizon Mobile, Voicemail and VZ Protect, the most of which are duplicates of Google apps in functionality.

None of them are detachable, and they all take up a significant amount of internal storage space.

Many of the system programs, however, cannot be moved to the card, despite the fact that some of them can.

If you intend to download a large number of applications, this is probably not the phone for you.

Despite the fact that it is older, the Droid Mini is even more affordable than the Core Prime and has a clearer display, more internal storage, and a better camera than the Core Prime.

If you’re ready to spend a little more money, the Motorola Droid Maxx 2is a far better choice, with excellent battery life and strong technology, although in a significantly bigger 5.5-inch form factor than the Droid Incredible.

Samsung Galaxy Core Prime review: This simple smartphone can’t top rivals

The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime from Verizon and MetroPCS is one of those phones that doesn’t claim to be anything more than the bare essentials you need to connect to Google’s best-in-class services, which include maps, Google Drive, and Google Now, among others. The phone’s basic gray appearance isn’t very eye-catching, and the mediocre screen is difficult to see in direct sunlight. Its camera is also many generations behind the times. Despite this, Verizon’s network is quite fast, and the phone’s pricing is among the most affordable available from Big Red.

After a mail-in rebate, MetroPCS offers the Core Prime for $130 without a contract, but I was able to find it for $50 after the refund was applied.

However, while the Galaxy Core Prime is the cheapest phone available on both carriers’ current lineups, a few dollars extra will get you a little better phone as well.

Samsung’s Galaxy Core Prime targets essentials (pictures)

Design and build

  • It has a 4.5-inch screen with a 800×480 resolution and 207 pixels per inch, and it measures 5.2 by 2.7 by 0.35-inch (131.3 by 68.4 by 8.8mm). The device weighs 4.59 ounces (130 grams) and has a screen size of 800×480.

As much as I hate to claim that once you’ve seen one Samsung, you’ve seen them all, it’s absolutely true in the case of this wonderfully predictable Galaxy Core Prime smartphone. The fact that it has rounded corners and a real home button leaves no doubt about the name that is imprinted onto the phone’s rear is also a plus. Because the black-gray covering shimmers in the light, it can be easily removed, as can be done with most Samsung phones (save for the current Galaxy S6 series), to show the battery and microSD card slot hidden behind.

In the rear, there’s a 5-megapixel camera with flash that produces good shots, while the front-facing camera only takes terrible selfies with a 2-megapixel camera and flash.

CNET photo by Josh Miller What do you think about that screen?

If the screen is used inside, it seems lighter gray (and more reflective) than the surrounding screens, and photos, Web pages, and videos appear grainy and a touch colorless in comparison.

This is very standard for phones of this caliber, but it is still worth mentioning. One thing to keep in mind is that the Galaxy Core Prime became increasingly heated over time, which is understandable given the humid summer days. It’s possible that you should keep an eye on this.

Interface and apps

The Galaxy Core Prime is powered by Android 4.4.4 KitKat, which isn’t the most recent version of the operating system (that honor goes to Android 5.1 Lollipop), but it will be soon followed by Android M. If this device upgrades, which it may or may not do, I think it will be to the Android Mtaste treat and will not be updated to Lollipop. Samsung has installed, as it has done in the past, its TouchWiz interface on top of Android, which gives it the same personality as its Android-based counterparts.

It’s also possible to modify the fast settings panel (which is a component of the notifications drawer) so that you can access toggles in the order you choose.

CNET photo by Josh Miller Approximately 20 carrier applications and partner services are installed on the Verizon device I tested, according to Big Red.

As overwhelming as the collection may seem, you may at the very least neutralize (but not completely delete) it by going to the settings menu on your phone.

Camera and video

  • 5-megapixel camera (the default setting is 3.9-megapixels)
  • 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 720p video recording
  • Bluetooth

When using the Galaxy Core Prime, navigating the camera app entails two things: first, you must understand how to use the app. You may use the Mode button to access options such as Auto, panoramic, Beauty Face, best photo, continuous shot, and sports mode. You can also use the Menu button to navigate between menus. The other choice takes you to the Settings menu, where you can adjust things like the photo resolution, ISO, and metering, white balance and exposure, grid lines, and geotagging, among other things (there are a few more selections besides).

  1. CNET photo by Josh Miller Beware!
  2. This does alter the aspect ratio from 3:5 for the 3.9-megapixels to 4:3 (which is currently more normal) for the highest resolution, as well as the resolution.
  3. While the Core Prime’s camera is calibrated to the best of its ability, it shoots vividly colored outside shots that contrast with its somewhat bloodless images taken in low-light circumstances.
  4. However, flash generates a brilliant light that makes everything appear a little brighter and clearer, but it is also deceptively bright and transparent.
  5. You’ll be asking for second helpings of both at this point.
  6. Jessica Dolcourt/CNETLike all photographs, the self-portraits in this collection elicit a trade-off.
  7. Indoor photographs appear gloomy, whilst outside photographs are brighter and more vibrant.

The video captured by the Core Prime’s 720p HD camcorder is similar to the rest of the phone’s features: adequate but not particularly spectacular.

Your chances of success will be higher if you stick to outside, well-lit scenarios that don’t record a lot of background noise.

Hardware performance

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 CPU with four cores running at 1.2GHz
  • Eight gigabytes of internal storage, one gigabyte of RAM, and up to one hundred and twenty-four gigabytes of extendable storage Battery capacity: 2,000mAh (removable)

In addition to being equipped with a lower-powered processor, the Galaxy Core Prime isn’t the fastest smartphone on the market. Because its 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor is the same one found in practically every phone at this price point, the Core Prime is on par with its closest competitors in terms of performance and performance. Scrolling between displays and menus does not affect the responsiveness of the navigational system. In my testing location, Verizon’s fast network (more on that below) allows films and music to stream pretty rapidly, even during peak hours.

That is unquestionably a plus.

Nonetheless, I wouldn’t get too worked up over it if I were you.

That was absolutely the case for Riptide GP2’s performance.

When it comes to graphics processing, the Galaxy Core Prime performs much worse than the top-tier Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4, as demonstrated by the Geekbench 3 and 3DMark – Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark tests.

Battery life

In terms of 3G call time, Samsung claims that the Core Prime’s 2,000mAh battery would last up to 10 hours, 9 hours for video playing, and 11 hours for Wi-Fi Internet use. The Core Prime’s performance well surpassed expectations in CNET’s continuous looping video test, with both tests lasting a total of 10 hours apiece on the Core Prime. Of course, depending on how you use your phone, the battery life may be greater or shorter for you. For example, transmitting messages consumes resources (and data!) at a quicker rate than streaming films and using realtime maps navigation.

In any case, the phone should be able to last you through a whole 8-hour work day without causing you any problems, however you should plan on charging it entirely at least once every day.

Network speeds and call quality

On Verizon’s network in the San Francisco Bay Neighborhood, I put the Galaxy Core Prime through its paces. Verizon has a rather robust network in my area (you may not share the same experience). Fast data rates were routinely reported by the diagnostic program, with downlink speeds frequently hovering between 30 and 40Mbps downlink and upload speeds typically hovering in the 20Mbps range. Of course, there were some dips, some of which were into the single-digit range; coverage differences are unavoidable.

  • As with any network, large files take slower to download via Verizon’s network, as they would on any other network.
  • The diagnostic speeds on the Ookla app were rather good in my testing location, according to the results.
  • Very big files, such as a movie file, will take significantly longer to download than smaller files, depending on the size of the file.
  • Calls were mostly free of static, however voices on both sides sounded a little muffled and artificial at times.
  • As is often the case, it’s difficult to distinguish between network performance in a certain region and the phone’s hardware capabilities, so just be aware that your experience may be different.

Is this the entry-level Android phone to buy?

The Galaxy Core Prime from Samsung is about as straightforward a smartphone as you will get anywhere. When it comes to pricing, the Core Prime’s low $168 price on Verizon and $130 price on MetroPCS will undoubtedly entice you to get it. It’s one of the greatest MetroPCS alternatives available in this price range, and it’s the phone I’d most likely choose (the next best phone I’d recommend is the LG Stylo, which costs twice as much). Customers of Verizon, on the other hand, can spend a few dollars extra and get a phone with superior features and overall performance.

  1. The Lucid 3 also outperforms the Core Prime in terms of video resolution (1080pHD against 720p) and built-in wireless charging.
  2. Because of the reduced screen size, this phone is easy to carry in one’s pocket.
  3. The screen is significantly crisper and just slightly larger (1,280x720p), while the camera and microphone are of greater resolution for roughly $25 extra (6.7-megapixels on the back, 5-megapixels on the front).
  4. If you want things to be straightforward, the Lumia 735 is the better phone for you.
  5. It has virtually equal specifications to the Core Prime, however it is significantly less expensive.

Having said that, the GSM-only phone will not operate with Verizon’s CDMA network technology, necessitating the purchase of a separate SIM card and service package. While the Galaxy Core Prime is adequate for its intended purpose, I recommend instead purchasing one of the other handsets.
