Amazon.com: Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition – Virtual Reality – for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge (Discontinued by Manufacturer) : Everything Else

On January 16, 2016, a review was conducted in the United States. Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 edge design Packaging for the product: Standard Packaging Purchase that has been verified When it comes to virtual reality, I really like the Gear VR. If you’ve dabbled with Google Cardboard, but don’t have a system or the conviction to jump into Desktop VR, the Gear VR is an amazing stepping stone into current-gen virtual reality. When I initially started exploring virtual reality, I was lucky enough to be able to experiment with a variety of different headsets.

When it comes to low-to-mid range VR, it’s so evident that this evaluation is mostly focused on the differences between the Innovator and Consumer editions of the headset!

I personally purchased the Gear VR Innovator and received the Gear VR Consumer version as a present from my friends and family.

A number of factors lead me to give this Innovator version 5/5 stars, however once again, I personally found information comparing the Consumer and Innovator editions inadequate when I initially started studying.

  1. (While the fan does result in a reduction in charging power, both devices are intended to be wireless, and better wired options, such as the Rift, are available.) 3) The passthrough camera DOES WORK without the need for any modifications to the Innovator.
  2. The Innovator, in my opinion, is more comfortable over a longer length of time than the Traditionalist.
  3. 2 is crucial depending on your usage – I myself do not like to have my gadget plugged in when I am using it, and would prefer to charge it beforehand before using it in any situation.
  4. The 5/5 rating takes into consideration the cost of a VR system if you already own an S6 – Cardboard and other accessories.
  5. Of course, I am prejudiced, but I believe that the InnovatorConsumer is the best!
  6. Galaxy Note 4 with a stylish design Packaging for the product: Standard Packaging Purchase that has been verified **WARNING** According to reports, this only works with the Note4.
  7. This was fantastic.

This is exactly why I purchased it.

I sat in virtual reality and watched the presidential debates on CNN.

It was an incredible and completely immersive experience.

I can only play for a short period of time) and the live material.

I DID IT!

If you have a note5, the new Gear VR features a built-in fan to keep fogging to a minimum, as well as a pass-through to allow you to charge your phone while using the headset.

Your battery will be completely depleted in less than an hour.

If I’m playing the cart racing game for more than 15 minutes, my phone will begin to overheat and shut off.

This problem does not occur during regular VR sessions.

In addition, you must maintain the optics CLEAN at all times.

GET THEM NOW.

To the best of my knowledge, it only fits the unprotected phone (I haven’t tried to push my phone into it while wearing the cover).

It’s also a real pain in the neck!

THE MOST AMAZING PARTY EVER.

VERY EDUCATIONAL FOR CHILDREN!

Also, it should be noted that it is powered by Oculus technology, and that the developers are attempting to “manage the media” in a similar way to iTunes.

Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 edge design Packaging for the product: Standard Packaging Purchase that has been verified Despite the fact that the Gear VR version I hold (for the S6 Edge) is rather old, I believe that my review is valid to any Gear VR version before or after it.

Is it any good, by the way?

The first step is to construct.

It is secured from the sides and the top to provide optimum safety (top part is detachable).

Warning!

The overall construction quality is excellent, but not for the price.

It is, in fact, rather wonderful.

In my instance, I have a 1440p screen that appears sharp.

There are several applications and games to choose from, but two stand out as must-haves: Netflix and the horror game Dreadhalls.

Aside from the films already mentioned, virtual reality cinema is also great.

If you have good noise-canceling headphones, you could even forget that you’re on an aircraft.

In terms of activities, there isn’t much to choose from outside from virtual reality experiences.

⅗ In general, do I believe this was a wise purchase?

If you already have a Samsung Galaxy phone and want to try virtual reality, then definitely.

There isn’t enough content to go around for it. Use it for a few weeks (at most months) and then put it out of your mind completely. Not because it’s horrible, but because it’s devoid of information. 4/5

Developed in conjunction with Oculus VR, the Samsung Gear VR is a virtual reality headgear that is produced by Samsung Electronics. The headset went on sale on November 27th, 2015, and is still available. If you’re using the Gear VR, a compatible Samsung Galaxy device serves as the display and processor for the headset, while the Gear VR unit itself serves as the controller, which contains the field of view and aninertial measurement unit, or IMU, for rotational tracking, and connects to the smartphone via USB-C or micro-USB.

The Gear VR was officially introduced on September 3, 2014, and it has been in production since then.

The innovator editions were intended to give developers and technology enthusiasts early access to the device.

Overview

The Samsung Gear VR is intended to be used in conjunction with Samsung’s high-end smartphones. Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+,Samsung Galaxy Note 5,Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge,Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+,Samsung Galaxy Note Fan Edition,Samsung Galaxy Note 8,Samsung Galaxy A8/A8+ (2018),Samsung Galaxy S9 / Galaxy S9+,Samsung Galaxy A8/A8+ (2018),Samsung Galaxy S9 / Galaxy The Galaxy Note10, Note10+, Note10 5G, and Note10+ 5G are all incompatible with the Gear VR, as is the Galaxy Note10 5G.

The focus of the headset may be altered by rotating the wheel located at the top of the headset.

The volume may be changed using the volume rockers, which are similarly located on the right hand side of the screen.

In terms of hardware, some of the major objectives Samsung set for this project were: that their headset would be able to support MTP (Motion to Photon) latency of less than 20 ms; the optimization of hardware and kernel; and the creation of the Galaxy Note 4’s QHD display, which would allow for high-resolution rendering in the headset, among others.

On the Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Home is the primary interface for downloading and interacting with content.

Despite the fact that the Gear VR is mostly used for mobile virtual-reality-based gaming and simulations, there has recently been an increased interest in the successful application of this device in scientific and medical education.

History

However, despite the fact that the Samsung Gear VR consumer edition was just introduced in November 2015, Samsung had already received a patent on a head-mounted display (HMD) in January 2005. This was one of the early suggestions for utilizing a mobile phone as the display for a head-mounted display (HMD). However, the state of mobile phone technology at the time the patent application was submitted severely restricted the level of quality and performance that could be achieved. Samsung has continued to conduct internal research on virtual reality and head-mounted displays.

The performance and display (despite the fact that the Galaxy S4 has a Full HD display) were not yet up to requirements, despite the fact that this team built numerous different prototypes.

The Samsung Gear VR was announced on September 3, 2014, at the Samsung press conference at the IFA Berlin trade show (along with a smartphone capable of running it, the Galaxy Note 4).

Hardware editions

Samsung Gear VR headsets are worn by two female participants. The SM-R320, the first generation of Samsung’s Gear VR, was introduced in December of the same year. This version was only compatible with the Galaxy Note 4, and not with any other devices. Specifically, this edition was made available to developers in order for them to have a better grasp of how the device operated and in order for them to generate content that would be ready for the official release of the consumer-oriented version of the device.

  • The SM-R321 was the second generation of Samsung’s Gear VR, and it was released in March 2015.
  • An interesting feature is the inclusion of a micro USB connector, which provides extra power for any connected devices, as well as a little fan within to keep the lens from fogging up.
  • It was first made available on November 20, 2015.
  • When compared to the previous editions, just a few small modifications have been made in this one.
  • It is also 19 percent lighter than the previous Innovator Edition, and its ergonomics have been enhanced, as has the touchpad, which has been modified to make navigating simpler.
  • In addition, the model makes use of a USB-C connector rather than a USB Micro-B connector in order to be compatible with the Note 7.
  • A set of adapters is included to allow for operation with older devices that use micro USB ports.
  • This was done for safety concerns.

A portable Gear VR Controller attachment was also introduced by Samsung, which will be included with the new model and will also be offered as a stand-alone accessory for older devices. It is still compatible with the devices that are currently supported.

On 15 September 2017, Samsung introduced an improved variant, the SM-R325, which has compatibility for the bigger Note 8 and will be available at the same time as the phone. A portable Gear VR Controller attachment was also introduced by Samsung, which will be included with the new model and will also be offered as a stand-alone accessory for older devices. It is still compatible with the devices that are currently supported.

The announcement resulted in the immediate suspension of 360° video uploads and premium video purchase transactions. Premium films from the site remained available until the service was shut down on September 30th, 2020. With the announcement, the Samsung XR and Samsung VR Video clients were also no longer receiving software updates.

  1. Samsung XR user accounts were disabled and all associated account information and data were permanently deleted from the Samsung XR service on September 30th, 2020.
  2. The Samsung VR Video app is no longer supported on the Samsung Gear VR and the Windows Odyssey headsets, according to the company.
  3. The Samsung XR mobile application is no longer supported on Android-based smartphones and tablets.
  4. Oculus (now owned by Meta Platforms) continues to provide support for its Gear VR headset through the Oculus Gear VR app, which is currently available for download from Google Play.

Samsung is keeping the Gear VR in stasis, and that might be fine

Samsung’s Gear VR is one of the most popular virtual reality headsets on the market, but its long-term viability has lately been called into question. At this week’s Unpacked presentation, Samsung made no mention of the mobile headset, and the company hasn’t made any meaningful improvements to the hardware since 2017. Despite this, Samsung has stated that all four of its new Galaxy S10 phone models would be compatible with the Gear VR, provided that they are connected via an adapter that comes with the headset.

  • In fact, it appears to be in a state of near-stasis, which is discouraging if you’d like to see Samsung address its numerous issues, but it may be the best practical course of action.
  • Today, Google sells a mobile headgear that is quite similar to the Daydream View, which can be powered by a variety of Android smartphones.
  • Another development is the development of wire-free headsets with complete motion tracking as well as virtual hands by a number of firms, including Oculus, HTC, and Google.
  • Purchasing a more advanced phone will immediately upgrade the screen, CPU, and battery on the old one.
  • Samsung can steadily enhance the Gear VR just by waiting for other goods to develop, without ever modifying the technology that powers the headset.
  • Film festivals such as Sundance and Tribeca, which have emerged as premier destinations for virtual reality experiences, began experimenting with Gear VR devices in the early days of 360-degree film production.
  • The Sundance Film Festival, which took place last month, continued to play its VR cinema programming using Samsung headsets.

If the programmers need to increase their collections, it is more convenient for them to use something they are already familiar with.

They’re using more advanced platforms, like as the Rift and the Vive, to do so.

Oculus, on the other hand, continues to push mobile VR as a suitable platform for immersive video, and it has invested in initiatives that illustrate this.

Unfortunately for Samsung, this still does not translate into widespread interest in mobile virtual reality, and most existing Gear VR customers will have few reasons to upgrade to a new model unless it incorporates significant modifications from the current model.

According to the research firm SuperData, Samsung shipped a total of 7.8 million devices between the time of its debut in 2015 and the end of 2018.

According to IDC, shipments of phone-powered mobile headsets decreased by 58.6 percent in the most recent fiscal quarter, while the market for standalone headsets in the form of the Oculus Go increased by 428.6 percent.

Unfortunately, this is poor news for individuals like me, who would like to see the Gear VR’s awful ergonomics and clumsy phone-pairing method completely overhauled.

It’s difficult to predict how long this will continue to be true.

At some point, Samsung will have to decide whether to update the Gear VR to work with a new generation of smartphones or whether to abandon the device altogether.

For the time being, though, the Gear VR may be precisely what we should be looking for from hardware companies: a working device that you can purchase without having to worry about a better version coming out next year or later.

Samsung Gear VR (2017) review: Samsung Gear VR’s best feature isn’t the Galaxy S8, it’s the controller

VRis a pain in the neck. It is both expensive and time-consuming to set up. At this stage, it may be more cost effective to experiment than than purchase. With the Gear VR, Samsung has taken a very logical approach to developing a product. Despite the fact that it just debuted a new third generation version of its phone-powered headset, the company’s mission has remained the same: to be easy and inexpensive. Gear VR is a wireless, snap-on solution that transforms your Samsung Galaxy phone into a surprisingly capable basic virtual reality headset at an inexpensive price.

What’s new in the latest version of Gear VR:

  • A wireless motion controller now makes it possible to control applications with only one hand
  • In addition to improved resolution and a built-in web browser, a revised Gear VR software upgrade makes VR applications perform smoother and cooler on older phones and headsets. The new Gear VR headset is compatible with the latest Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus smartphones, but it is otherwise identical to last year’s device.

CNET image courtesy of Joshua Goldman With the Galaxy S8 Plus, S8, S7, S7 Edge, Note5, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge+, the new Gear VR headset is compatible. It comes with Micro USB and USB-C adapters, as well as a USB-C cable. Small dongles, however, must be kept track of because of the additional pieces of equipment. Although the fact that Google’s more elegant Daydream View design does not require any plug-in dongles, the bigger Gear VR, despite being thicker and made of more plastic, fits better on my face.

  1. The Gear VR is still compatible with wired headphones, which means that the headphone socket on the phone is not impeded.
  2. I’ve been using the most recent version of the app with the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus for the past couple of weeks and have had no issues.
  3. Those are more complex items of technology that necessitate the use of a cutting-edge computer.
  4. CNET photo by Sarah Tew No, the Gear VR does not break new ground, but it is the VR that I would most likely use on a daily basis and that I would suggest to most people as a beginner package.
  5. Because it is simple to put on and walk around in, it is far less expensive than high-end ones, and it is compatible with some excellent virtual reality experiences.
  6. It is possible to use the controller with an older Gear VR headset for an additional $40 if you already own an earlier Gear VR headset.
  7. Even if it were only for that reason, I’d still choose Gear VR over Daydream.
  8. If you already own a Gear VR, you should invest in the new controller, which is the greatest component of the new hardware.

However, you should be aware that there aren’t many apps that take full advantage of this feature at the moment. A remote control that was desperately required. CNET photo by Sarah Tew

VR needs a good remote

An actual remote control is now available, rather than having to fumble about with an uncomfortable touchpad on the side of your head. A click pad is included, as is a home button and back button, as well as volume controls and a trigger on the bottom of the device. It has the sensation of a pointer or a magic wand. In my hands, it feels like a more refined version of what Google included with Daydream. However, it is also heavier and less efficiently integrated into the headset design. Samsung supplies a basic elastic strap that is intended to tuck the controller into the Gear VR’s headband when not in use, but I’m concerned that this will be yet more remote to misplace in the wild.

Aside from that, the pointer appears to be significantly larger in virtual reality than it actually is in my hand.

Instead of using a USB charging cable, it operates on two AAA batteries, which allows it to last longer.

Facebook’s all over this thing

Facebook owns Oculus, and Oculus is responsible for the software and applications that run on the Gear VR. With the most recent Gear VR software upgrade, which I tested, the future of Facebook and Oculus becomes more evident. For starters, the Oculus program that runs on your Galaxy phone now requires a Facebook login rather than an Oculus account as a login option. In addition to making it simpler to loop in friends for virtual reality connections – something that Facebook is actively encouraging – using Facebook implies that your mobile VR experience via Gear VR will become more and more intertwined with your Facebook existence.

Facebook’s bolder, considerably more interactiveSpaces app isn’t available on Gear VR (yet), and there’s no clear indication when it will be accessible on Gear VR, assuming it will ever come to Gear VR at all.

No more hot phone

The latest Oculus Gear VR software update, which is also compatible with earlier Samsung phones that are equipped with the Gear VR, is more power efficient. I haven’t tested it with older Samsung phones, but the Galaxy S8 Plus with Gear VR doesn’t become as hot as the previous model when it’s linked into virtual reality. Furthermore, the battery drain appears to be somewhat more controllable thus far. My battery was depleted by roughly 15 percent after an hour or two of virtual reality. In the case of previous Gear VR devices, I’d be lucky if I got more than a couple of hours of VR playback on a single charge.

A handful of controller-ready apps

Expect not all Gear VR applications to completely function with the updated remote. A couple dozen applications are currently fully remote-supported, with the controller acting as both a pointer and a controller, as of this writing. A few of the standouts include Hulu, Altspace VR, the fantastic Gear VR warfare game Wands, and Harmonix’s karaoke game Singspace, among others.

In addition to the motion controls, older programs may make use of the controller’s touchpad as well. Samsung claims that more applications will fully support the remote, but this is dependent on whether or not app developers care to update their programs.

The best mobile VR for now

VR will continue to evolve, with the addition of room-sensing cameras for complete motion tracking and, maybe, hand tracking without the use of a remote. Gear VR is no longer considered cutting-edge technology. As a matter of fact, the new controller is primarily intended to stay up with what Google has accomplished with Daydream VR over the past year. However, the overall vast bundle of Gear VR apps, as well as the expanding number of Facebook-supported capabilities in Oculus’ apps, make it a better package than it was previously.

It’s well worth the money for that reason alone.

However, for the time being, Gear VR continues to be the most valuable extra feature available to all Samsung phone owners.
