Do you really need to rent a cable box? No, there’s an app for that

  • In fact, one of the most irritating components of your TV bill doesn’t cover any channels or give any entertainment at all (unless “fussing with the remote” qualifies as entertainment): the costs you pay to rent a box from which you may watch them on television. These fees – which are frequently in the tens of dollars per television – continue to be charged despite the poor quality of many of their interfaces and the migration of cord-cutters to streaming services. As a result, they were successful in defeating the Federal Communications Commission’s 2016 attempt to open the market for pay-TV equipment, which prompted television providers to swear that they would allow other corporations to ship watching applications for their systems. Under President Donald Trump, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) canceled that program, and Big Cable quietly reneged on its promise. Now that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has virtually relinquished TV-box regulation – as stated in a September 4 filing that was picked up the following day by tech writer Dave Zatz – TV users may only rely on the benevolence of their television service providers. Finally, there’s Roku: On Roku, you can now watch NBC’s Peacock streaming app. Tune in to: Ad-supported streaming is poised to erode subscription streaming and suffocate cable television. The good news is that some of them have upgraded earlier applications that stream their channels via a broadband connection by adding the ability to display your TV on a television rather than just a phone or tablet screen. According to Leichtman Research Group’s ranking of pay-TV companies with a million or more customers, the following are your app options: ♦Comcast: Roku media devices, as well as several Samsung and LG linked TVs, are supported by the leading television provider in the United States. The company’s Xfinity Stream Android and iOS applications now offer wireless Chromecast output to a TV that is compatible with the service. Furthermore, Comcast is no longer requiring you to purchase at least one unit. AT T: The video services offered by this telecommunications behemoth differ from one another. The streaming applications for its DirecTV satellite service do not support either Chromecast or Apple’s AirPlay, which allows content to be streamed to an Apple TV or a connected TV running Apple’s software. AT T’s U-verse wired service now includes an Amazon Fire TV app, but it maintains the same restrictions on its Android and iOS applications as before. However, the Android and iOS apps for AT T’s new AT T TV service – which should not be confused with the streaming-only AT T TV Now service – are compatible with the share-to-TV functions of Google and Apple. AT T TV also offers connected-TV applications for the Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Samsung televisions, however the company’s website does not explicitly state that these are available. For Android and iOS devices (with Chromecast and AirPlay support), as well as some Amazon Kindle Fire tablets, Spectrum offers TV apps, as does Apple TV, Roku players and TVs, and the vast majority of newer Samsung connected televisions. Spectrum is the second largest cable company in the United States. In addition to Dish Network, the other satellite-TV service has a Dish Anywhere app for iOS, Android devices, and – here is the essential part – Amazon Kindle Fire tablets and TV players. Virgin Media: The company’s Fios TV app for Android and iOS is compatible with both Chromecast and AirPlay, however company spokesperson Andrew Kameka cautioned that some channels may not be available in that program. Cox: This cable provider’s Android and iOS applications do not yet support Chromecast or AirPlay, however spokesperson Todd Smith stated in an email that “it is in our product plan.” You can, however, watch television in a browser and, if the browser is Chrome, cast that viewing experience to a Chromecast-equipped television.Altice:Subscribers to its Optimum and Suddenlink cable-TV services can use its Altice One app for Apple TV – or use the iOS app’s AirPlay output to stream to a connected TV that is running Apple’s software – to watch television. Its Android application, on the other hand, does not support Chromecast. The most significant barrier to adopting any of these applications, though, continues to be their relative invisibility. A TV provider’s website cannot be relied upon to inform you of their services when you buy service, let alone document their output specifications. When asked about the applications in an email, John Bergmayer, legal director of the Washington, D.C.-based charity Public Knowledge, expressed dissatisfaction: “There are always so many minor intricacies and gotchas that are hard to know about until you actually try to use their apps.” – Rob Pegoraro is a tech journalist located in Washington, D.C., who writes about a variety of topics. Customer Support? Customer Contempt!

My ability to establish favorite channels on my iPhone and iPad devices is not functioning properly at this time. Since then, I’ve been attempting to contact ‘Support’ in order to resolve the issue. September. Yes, you read that correctly: “Yes, you read that correctly: September. But it was in vain. Instructions on how to remedy the problem have been supplied to me, however they have proven unsuccessful. I’ve been promised that the issue has been ‘escalated’ to a higher management level as a result of my inquiry.

  1. Customer care representatives have informed me over and over again that they have been assured by the developers that they have been working on the problem and that it should be resolved by a specific date.
  2. The most current information I’ve received indicates that a future update will resolve the issue.
  3. There has been no change.
  4. After a while, attempting to receive a response from the app’s help feature is met with full and utter silence, which is frustrating.
  5. Simply put, stop responding.
  6. That is no longer the case.
  7. This long-time, devoted client has had enough.
  8. Although it seems that you have already submitted a support request through the app’s help center, if you would be so kind as to email us the support ticket to [email protected], I will ensure that this is given the highest priority possible.

Good App, just a suggestion

FIOS App is great, however I have one recommendation for it. We should be able to automatically include premium channels in our channel lineup when they are offering a “free” month (or a two-week free trial, as is the case with Starz’s present promotion) so that customers can decide if they want to subscribe to them. Only a few weeks ago, those of us who do not have access to HBO were essentially ‘gifted’ with the premium channel. That particular channel did really “emerge.” My iPad FIOS App, however, does not appear to be displaying the current two-week sample for 2 week free Starz, just on my primary TV screen, which is where the set-top box is located.

Groan!

I just had a bad experience with this application.

As a result, there was no connection at all.

When service was restored without the continual spinning, I noticed that the image quality had deteriorated. As time passes, the picture becomes hazy, until it is no longer visible on the screen and you can no longer read what is being displayed on it at all.

Problems with Fios TV app

This article provides a review of the Fios TV application. It is not a very dependable application. It is meant to remember your favorite channels, but it has a history of either deleting them or swapping them with stations that they appear to want you to watch rather than your own. On the first screen, you are presented with a list of shows that you rarely or never view. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to how they chose the stations that they promote, since many of them have little connection to our interests in the first place.

As a whole, I believe they should solicit some client feedback in order to improve the product’s overall customer focus.

The Verizon FiOS TV app is available on the Xbox One. Customers have been informed that Verizon’s FiOS TV applications for Xbox gaming consoles and smart TVs would be terminated, reducing the number of devices on which to watch live television programs going forward. On March 31, 2016, the FiOS TV app, which allows you to watch your FiOS TV programs through a Smart TV or an Xbox game system, will be discontinued and no longer be accessible for use, according to many users who have reported receiving an e-mail from Verizon.

  • However, we have some exciting news for you: you can now view your FiOS TV programming from your smartphone or tablet using our FiOS Mobile app.
  • Even though the FiOS TV app is no longer listed on Verizon’s website, the software is still accessible for use with the Xbox 360, Xbox One, as well as Samsung smart TVs and Blu-ray players.
  • Live streaming TV channels and on-demand programming are still available on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets through the FiOS Mobile applications foriOS andAndroid.
  • In addition, Verizon said that the app only had a “limited number of channels available,” rather than the whole roster.
  • For example, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants to mandate that Verizon and other firms make their content available to developers of third-party applications and hardware so that consumers would no longer be required to rent set-top boxes from their television provider.

However, while Verizon did not join the main industry coalition opposing the FCC proposal, the company’s decision to discontinue app support for Xbox consoles and smart TVs demonstrates that consumers cannot always rely on their pay-TV provider to support the devices on which they want to watch their favorite channels.

We received an e-mail from one of our readers, who informed us that he had been running the software on two Xbox consoles so that he could have access on two of his televisions.

“This is why I despise cable providers,” said another user on the Reddit website.

Now it appears like I will be stuck with Sling and that I will have to investigate Playstation Vue. This is ludicrous, and I can’t wait till the Federal Communications Commission opens up the set-top box market.”

Verizon Fios TV App Now Supported by Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV 4K

(Photo courtesy of Verizon) Verizon said on Wednesday that its Fios TV app is now supported by Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV 4K connected TV devices, in addition to other devices. Subscribers to the Fios TV service are still required to lease at least one proprietary set-top box, with the cost of doing so included in the base subscription price of the service. Currently, the linear pay TV package contains a single Fios TV One box that may be controlled via a voice remote. While the addition of Fire TV and Apple TV compatibility broadens the scope of the app’s use beyond mobile devices, the software had previously been restricted to iOS and Android smart phones and tablets.

“You may now mix and match the way you watch your favorite shows as well.

Nonetheless, with Verizon concentrating on its “MixMatch” strategy, which allows Fios Internet customers to bundle third-party live-streaming bundles such as Google’s YouTube TV instead of Verizon’s linear TV product if they so choose, the company’s wireline internet business is growing rapidly as well.

Verizon only added around 10,000 Fios Internet users during the second quarter of last year.

Fios revenue was $2.9 billion in the third quarter, representing a 5.4 percent increase year on year.

Verizon launches its new Fios TV app, a better-looking version of its old FiOS Mobile app

I’m a Verizon Fios user who has a basic internet and television plan that I’m generally content with. Certainly, the fact that the technician who installed our system somehow managed to sneak in a couple of channels that we weren’t allowed to have (shhh) has helped, but I’ve come to prefer it to any of the past service providers I’ve dealt with. A Verizon FiOS Mobile app is something I haven’t taken advantage of yet, perhaps because my memories of the obnoxious bloatware that defecated all over my phones during my time as a Verizon Wireless user remain fresh in my mind.

There are certain improvements over the company’s previous Fios app, but it is not necessarily a better experience overall.

Fios TV, which is being billed as “a totally new Fios experience,” really delivers the same set of functions as the previous FiOS Mobile application.

On the left, you can see the in-app remote in the new Fios TV app, which works quite well; on the right, you can see the in-app remote in the old FiOS Mobile app, which is a facsimile of the real-life remote; the number pads on both remotes can be swiped to access additional controls for volume, channels, DVR, and other features.

  1. The DVR view in the new Fios TV app is shown on the left; the DVR view in the previous FiOS Mobile app is shown on the right.
  2. Right: A preview of an upcoming live television broadcast in the new Fios TV app; left: A preview of the same show on the previous FiOS Mobile app.
  3. It’s difficult to determine whether the new FiOS Mobile app is a significant upgrade over the previous one – some operations, such as beginning a “On Now” channel stream, need fewer clicks in the old app, for example.
  4. Having said that, the new app is unquestionably more visually appealing.
  5. If you’re a Verizon Wireless member, you may use the app to stream entertainment without worrying about any of the data you consume going towards your data allowance.
  6. GMS access is necessitated by the availability of some choices.
  7. Jason Hahn is a writer and musician who lives in the United States (118 Articles Published) Jason works as a corporate communicator during the week and as a freelance writer on the weekends.

How to Connect to FiOS without a Cable Box

While it is possible to connect FiOS to a TV without using a FiOS cable box, FiOS customer care has stated that you will only be able to receive a “small subset of unencrypted channels” if you do not use a cable box. In addition, you will not be able to use FiOS features such as Video On Demand or the Interactive Media Guide if you do not have a cable box installed. In light of these limitations, a television with an integrated QAM tuner is required in order for this connection to function properly.

Extend the Coaxial Cable Transmitting the Main FiOS TV Signal

Connect the coaxial cable that is carrying the primary FiOS TV signal to one of the RF terminals on the female-to-female coaxial cable coupler, which is situated on the back of the coupler. The cable that was placed by the FiOS technician is seen here. You may get it by plugging it into a power socket in your house. In order to ensure proper connection, ensure that the conductor wire situated at the tip of the coaxial cable is placed into a small hole located in the middle of the RF terminal as you plug the cable into the terminal.

Step 2

To fasten the coaxial cable to the terminal, turn the screw connection on the cable in a clockwise manner until it is tight.

Step 3

Connect the other end of the independent coaxial cable to the RF terminal on the opposite side of the female-to-female coaxial cable coupler, which is situated on the other side of the female-to-female coaxial cable coupler.

Connect FiOS Directly to TV

Before you start, turn off the television.

Step 2

Connect the coaxial cable that is carrying the primary FiOS TV signal to the RF input connector on the back of the television set, which is situated on the rear panel. This implies that you must connect the other end of the coaxial cable that was previously attached to the female-to-female coaxial cable coupler (step 3 from the previous section) to the RF input terminal that is situated on the rear panel of the television set in order for it to function. This terminal is commonly referred to as “Antenna In” or “Ant In” on many television sets.

Step 3

Connect the cable to the termination and tighten it.

Program the TV to Pick Up Unencrypted FiOS Channels

To access the TV’s menu display, press the “Menu” button on the remote control.

Step 3

Navigate to the “Channel Setup” submenu from the main menu.

Step 4

Carry out an automated cable television scan (sometimes labeled “CATV”). It will take a few minutes for the scan to be completed. Please do not interfere with the procedure.

Step 5

Use the channel buttons on your television to navigate between the FiOS channels that are accessible to you without the need for a cable box.

  • A QAM tuner is built into the television set. Female to female coaxial cable coupler (optional)
  • 75-ohm coaxial cable (optional)
  • Female to female coaxial cable coupler (optional)

Tip

Another option for connecting FiOS to a TV without the need of a cable box is to connect the TV to a FiOS adaptor. The TV is capable of receiving all of the FiOS channels that are included in your bundle while using the adapter.

Some FiOS capabilities, such as Video On Demand, will, however, continue to be accessible to you until you upgrade your service. Although the FiOS adapter is less expensive to rent than the FiOS cable box, there is a monthly cost associated with using it.
