Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus review: the anti-iPhone

If you make a purchase after clicking on a Verge link, Vox Media may get a commission. See our code of ethics for more information. Every year over the past ten years, Samsung has introduced a constant stream of new Galaxy S phones, which have become increasingly popular. The first generation Galaxy S phones were good, but not spectacular, and were so near replicas of the iPhone that Apple sued Samsung and won the lawsuit. It took Samsung many years to find its footing in the high-end hardware market, and the company’s most recent Galaxy S phones have been noticeably better, though a little predictable.

During the previous ten years, Samsung has established itself as a distinct brand.

In fact, it almost feels like the polar opposite of the iPhone: if you’ve been disappointed with Apple’s recent devices due to the lack of headphone jacks, the addition of notches, or the removal of fingerprint scanners, Samsung is here to help you out with a headphone jack, a fingerprint scanner, and a notchless screen design (that has some other compromises).

  1. But it isn’t to suggest there aren’t any parallels between the Apple iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy S5.
  2. You can even option an S10 Plus up to a whopping $1,600, which is over three times the starting price of the popular OnePlus 6T, according to CNET.
  3. Yes, the screen is larger, and there are some incremental improvements in performance and battery life, but if you already own a Galaxy S8 or S9, an S10 will not significantly improve your experience.
  4. It’s only going to cost you more money.
  5. Refined is the best word to describe it: many phones have curved displays, glass backs, and metal frames, but few are as pleasant to handle or as perfectly put together as this one.
  6. The front and rear glass of the top-tier S10 and S10 Plus curve into the metal frame, making the phones easier to grasp despite the fact that they feature extremely big displays.
  7. Samsung has been known for producing curved screens for some years.

The only thing I’d do differently is put a case and PopSocket on it to make it a little more manageable.

The S10 Plus’ improvements extend to features like as its vibration motor, which has a considerably more pleasant feel than the vibration motors seen in many other Android phones.

When typing on the keyboard, it delivers satisfying feedback.

When you’re not using headphones, you may listen to music through stereo speakers that are both powerful and full-sounding.

The base model S10 comes with 128GB of internal storage, which I believe will be sufficient for the majority of users.

You can also use the S10 to wirelessly charge another device, such as Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds headphones or Galaxy Watch Active wristwatch, although I haven’t found much use for this function other than to show it off to friends and family.

This is a minor nuisance, but it is still present.

However, Samsung has blocked users from assigning this button to the Google Assistant or other virtual assistants, so you’ll still have to use an external app if you want to do so.

An OLED panel with rich, brilliant colors and good viewing angles makes up the majority of the device’s display.

The screen extends all the way to the top and bottom of the phone, with only the tiniest of bezels above and below the screen to break up the space.

The S10’s display, according to Samsung, is the first on the market to support HDR10+, which is supported by Amazon’s Prime Video and YouTube, among others.

On a television, none of these appear to be true HDR.) Netflix does not currently support HDR on the Galaxy S10 line, but it is expected to be updated to do so shortly after the phone becomes available for purchase.

What’s contained in the screen is perhaps much more intriguing than the screen itself.

As an alternative, Samsung has implemented an offset “hole punch” design, which allows the camera to poke through the screen on the right side of the device.

This design enables Samsung avoid the oft-criticized notch appearance, but it also means that the battery and network indicators are uncomfortably moved off-center to the left.

The hole-punch design’s off-center appearance makes it appear much worse in my opinion.

Depending on the app you’re using, that black bar may or may not appear.

It is possible to disguise the look of the front camera with software; however, doing so is equivalent to adding a large bezel to the top of the phone.

The S10’s fingerprint sensor is ultrasonic, which is touted to be more reliable and difficult to fake than the optical in-screen fingerprint scanners we’ve seen on phones like the OnePlus 6T and other recent releases.

However, it is neither as quick or as reliable as the classic capacitive fingerprint scanner found on the rear of the Galaxy S9 (which is faster and more trustworthy).

Even then, I found myself having to unlock the S10 more than once before it would work.

The S10 does include a face unlock function, but it is limited to searching for your face in a prior photograph and comparing it to a previous image – there is no 3D mapping or anything like that involved.

As a result of consumer input, Samsung claims that it built an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner to be placed on the front of the phone, which allowed for more screen real estate than placing a capacitive sensor in a bezel below the screen would have permitted.

After speaking with the firm, I learned that it would continue to tune and enhance the face scanner performance in the months leading up to the S10’s release.

It’s far easier and more dependable to use than the S10’s in-screen fingerprint sensor, which is nifty-looking but ultimately underwhelming.

It has three cameras on the back of the phone: a standard wide camera (12 megapixels with an f/1.5 optically stabilized lens), an already-familiar telephoto camera (12 megapixels with an f/2.4 optically stabilized lens), and a brand new ultrawide camera (16 megapixels with an f/2.2 optically stabilized lens).

  • It’s like to having an entire camera bag full of lenses packed right into your phone in terms of functionality.
  • However, because it is so broad, it distorts considerably at the borders – Samsung should conduct more post-processing correction after the image is captured to reduce the distortion.
  • Aside from the addition of a new lens, the camera’s performance hasn’t altered significantly from previous Samsung smartphones.
  • However, it retains the distinctive Samsung aesthetic, with overexposed photos and a warm white tone.
  • Warm white balance might be useful for portraits, but Samsung’s tendency to overexpose photographs in order to get brighter shots can result in skin tones that appear strange at times.
  • The one area where Samsung achieves a decent compromise between the Pixel and the iPhone is with HDR photography: the photographs aren’t as dramatic as Google’s, but they don’t suck up the shadows in strange ways like the iPhone does.
  • One strange peculiarity is that the S10’s portrait mode utilizes the primary camera rather than the telescopic lens, resulting in portrait photos that are somewhat wide.

Rather unexpectedly, Samsung has enhanced the camera’s capabilities with new software tricks.

A night mode is available, but unlike the Pixel, you cannot turn it on and off at your leisure like on the Pixel.

In addition, even if you do all of that, it will still fall short of the performance of Google’s Night Sight.

With the main camera, you can capture footage in up to 4K at 60 frames per second, or 4K at 30 frames per second with the ultrawide or telephoto lenses.

Finally, the stereo sound produced by the S10 is actually pretty nice, and it’s far better than the sound captured by the majority of other Android phones.

In an amusing twist, this does not make advantage of the S10 Plus’ second front camera to provide a broader picture; rather, it is just cropping in and out of the same image.

The portrait mode on the S10 Plus is likewise rather good, if not ideal, in the same way that the portrait mode on any other smartphone is.

The hardware in Samsung phones was beautiful and capable for many years, but the software was a letdown for many years.

Even while its software isn’t flawless, and there’s still potential for development, it looks good, makes sense, and is generally simple to use in the majority of cases.

The most important purpose of One UI is to provide a consistent appearance and feel that makes it easier to utilize these large-screened phones.

Many of the Android 9 features that Google introduced last year, including as the Digital Wellbeing service, adaptive brightness capabilities, and the screen rotation button in the menu bar, are now included on the Samsung Galaxy S9.

My experience with Samsung’s gesture interface was so disorienting that I ended up using the default three-button navbar instead.

I wish Samsung would just allow me to select which applications to install during the setup process.

When it comes to Samsung software, the nagging question is how long it will take for updates to be released.

This is the first phone I’ve tested that has Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 chipset, and the phone’s performance is unexpectedly quick and smooth.

Even though it’s difficult to quantify, the user interface appears to be more refined than that of a OnePlus 6T or other high-end Android phones.

Even with minimal usage, I’ve been able to get two days between charges, and I’ve had no difficulty getting it through a full day even with severe usage.

The S10 Plus does not appear to be very different from last year’s S9 Plus in terms of design.

I don’t think that’s necessarily incorrect; however, I don’t believe there’s much reason for S9 or even S8 owners to spend $1,000 on an S10.

The Galaxy S10 is the most popular Android smartphone in 2019, and it is the most compelling alternative to the iPhone currently on the market, according to IDC.

Are you so attached to iOS and iMessage that you’ll never consider switching, or are you seeking for something with capabilities that aren’t available on the iPhone?

A similar dilemma arises when deciding between the Galaxy S10 and Google Pixel: how significant do you believe software upgrades and night photography are to your decision?

For those still debating whether the Galaxy S10 Plus is worth nearly double the price of a OnePlus 6T, consider that the extra money will be put toward a better display and speakers as well as waterproofing, wireless charging, and a far better camera than you’d get with a OnePlus 6T.

The fact that Samsung has been making Galaxy phones for a decade shows that the company understands what its customers want and what they expect from them.

Amazon.com: Samsung Galaxy S10 Factory Unlocked Android Cell Phone

On June 14, 2019, a verified purchase was reviewed in the United States of America. This phone is equipped with Exynos, not Snapdragon. Due to the fact that it is an international version, it will not operate with my Straighttalk SIM card. First and foremost, it does not connect to my mobile data; I had to enter an Access Point Name in order for the data to function properly. Second, until the “wifi calling” feature is enabled, the calls will not be received. Aside from that, even when the phone is turned on, the calls hang up at odd times, sometimes without even ringing, and 70% of the time I try to contact someone, a box appears that reads “Not registered on network.” I’m also unable to send images AT ALL, and my messages are failing to transmit on a sporadic basis.

  2. Due to the fact that it is an international version, it will not operate with my Straighttalk SIM card.

  5. As soon as the device booted up, I was informed that it had been reset (it was shown as new and unactivated), and that I would need to log in using the account that had previously been used for the device.
  6. They advised a hard reset and supplied a video demonstrating how to do so, but nothing has worked so far as a result of their recommendations.
  7. verified purchaseReviewed in the United States on July 2, 2019Verified Purchase WARNING: BUYER BEWARE.

The signal on my $100 phone was far better.

Second, the phone performed well for three months before a portion of the display stopped working entirely.

In other words, when Samsung’s equipment fails, the company itself will not respect the warranty?

What a coincidence!.

This was the worst $800 buy I’ve ever made.

Although she did state that if there was any indication of water damage, the guarantee would be voided (we live in A VERY humid climate: great).

On April 21, 2019, a verified purchase was reviewed in the United States of America.

My prior phone was a Samsung S5, so that’s what I’m using as a benchmark.

My phone serves as a workhorse for me.

Fingerprint – only works 50% of the time, and you must push really firmly.

Because to the curvature of the S10’s glass border, I was constantly mistaking it for a physical touch on the screen.

Telephoto – When I went back over my last two years of images, I noticed that I had very few portrait shots, so I decided not to use telephoto.

What’s the sense of covering it if you have to do so for protection?

The same goes for colors, which are covered by the case.

And it goes all the way to the edge of the smartphone (no borders).

The side keys are located at the top of the device.

Using WiFi to make calls is not possible on this unlocked model.

Performance.

The North American version is equipped with the most recent Qualcomm 855 processor.

I’m thinking on swapping this out for the s10e version at this point.

Purchase that has been verified I bought the prismatic black, but instead received a flat black, which makes me feel taken advantage of.

It is a significant advance over the GS7, which I previously had and used with great pleasure and satisfaction.

Although the fingerprint unlock isn’t flawless, it is a significant advance over the previous system.

Things I don’t like: when the screen is turned off, it’s difficult to distinguish between the top and bottom of the screen.

I don’t like that notifications don’t simply appear on the top bar; they also appear in tiny over whatever other screen I’m currently seeing – whether it’s an article I’m reading or a game I’m playing.

The thing I despise the most: frikken Bixby!

You know that wonderful and really cool voice control that you can use to decline a call?

What a lovely gesture.

Those responsible for making the judgment should be dismissed.

As a result, it is more efficient to just reach over and press the button.

I would have purchased a GS9 if I had wanted to keep this feature.

I hope they take this into consideration and correct it in a future release. Then this stuff is going to be fantastic!

Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e, S10+ & S10 5G Comparison Part 2

Wish to have some of the S10’s features but not the expensive price tag? Look no farther than the Honor View 20. The S10e is the right choice for you in that case. Screen Dimensions: Starting with the smallest, the S10e has a diagonal measurement of 5.8 inches. Despite the fact that it is the smallest of the four S10 phones, it is likely the easiest to hold when texting with one hand and is noticeably lighter in the pocket. AMOLED Infinity-O Displays: All four S10 smartphones are equipped with Quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O Displays, which provide some of the deepest blacks and most vibrant colors possible on a smartphone display.

  • The S10e is the only one equipped with a glass display with a flat surface.
  • Images stay sharp and detailed, regardless of whether you’re on a soccer field in the middle of summer or re-watching the final season of a popular fantasy television program in the middle of the night.
  • However, a capacitive fingerprint sensor has been integrated into the power button, which is located on the right side of the phone.
  • Construction: The Samsung S10e is made of lightweight aluminum with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and rear panels, which makes it resistant to mild drops, dents, and scratches.
  • Photographic capabilities: For selfie enthusiasts, each S10 phone is equipped with a 10 megapixel (MP) camera with live focus and dual pixel autofocus (AF).
  • The S10e comes with a dual-lens back camera.
  • Other features of the camera include an 8x digital zoom and a 0.5x optical zoom, among others.
  • It is available in two different memory and storage configurations: one with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, and another with 8 GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
  • 3100 mAh is a respectable amount of battery life, especially considering that this is a very intelligent battery.

However, what does 3100 mAh imply to you is another question. Up to 11 days of standby time and up to 33.93 hours of talk time are possible with this device. 2 When you combine that with a smart battery, you’ll be able to enjoy worry-free operation.

Samsung Galaxy S10

There is nothing standard about the Samsung Galaxy S10. It is anything but standard. It’s the flagship device in the Samsung S10 series for a reason, and it’s packed with features that distinguish it from the other devices in the line. If you’re searching for a phone that’s filled with features but isn’t too heavy to carry around, this may be the device for you. Screen Size: The S10’s screen is just ideal, Goldilocks-style, since it is neither too big nor too little. With a typical screen size of 6.1 inches and a curved display, it gives the highest possible screen-to-phone ratio at the perfect size for most people.

  1. The S10, in contrast to the S10e, sports a curved display that is borderless.
  2. This is the first model in the range to include an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, which is included on the S10.
  3. Construction: The S10’s body is made of sturdy aluminum and has glass panels on both the front and rear sides.
  4. According to Corning, Gorilla Glass 6 is “the most durable cover glass currently available for consumer mobile devices.” It also has a 3.5 mm headphone port, much like the S10e, so you won’t have any problems using your Galaxy Buds if you haven’t gotten around to ordering them yet.
  5. There is also a secondary 12 MP wide-angle camera with variable aperture, as well as a 16 MP ultra-wide camera, to catch those long-distance photos.
  6. All of the other fantastic picture capabilities, such as camera modes for food, professional photos, and portraits, as well as intelligence tools for scene optimization and shot suggestions, are now included.
  7. The front camera comes equipped with autofocus and live focus as standard, allowing you to take selfies that are worthy of a professional.
  8. However, if you’re someone who likes to shoot a lot of photographs, the 8 GB / 512 GB model would be a good option for you.
  9. 1 Battery life (in hours): A 3400mAh battery sounds fantastic, but what exactly does that imply in practice?

It implies that you are less likely to experience power outages on your next road trip or run out of battery power in the middle of the day at work. With up to 35.83 hours of usage time and up to 13 days of standby time, the S10 gives you the power you need to get through the day. 2

Samsung Galaxy S10+

With the S10+, the bar has been increased significantly. In addition to a beefed-up display, long-lasting battery life, and a high-quality camera system, the Galaxy S10 is distinguished by a number of unique features that set it apart from the competition. The S10+ has a screen that measures a massive 6.4 inches diagonally, which puts it right in the middle of the pack. When you combine the virtually edgeless curved display with one of the biggest displays available, you won’t be afraid to use your phone to watch the next binge-worthy program.

  • The S10+ boasts a pixel density of 522 pixels per inch and a punch-out for a dual camera on the front display.
  • A curved, bezel-less screen allows you to make use of virtually all of the 6.4 inches available for viewing pleasure.
  • Construction:Lightweight metal frames are combined with front and rear Gorilla Glass panels to provide a sturdy construction that can withstand everyday use and abuse.
  • On this plus-sized variant, you may still use your headphones with the 3.5 mm headphone connector.
  • The camera is where the S10+ truly begins to distinguish itself from the rest of the Galaxy lineup.
  • The three rear-facing cameras, each with an LED flash, are arranged horizontally across the back of the device.
  • A telephoto camera with 12 MP and optical image stabilization (OIS).

Aside from that, this monster phone is also equipped with two front-facing cameras.

And the second front-facing camera is an 8 MP depth camera, which is ideal for creating artisticbokeh effects with the phone’s camera.

The device comes in a variety of types, so make sure to get one that fulfills all of your photo-hoarding, game-playing, app-addicted requirements.

If that isn’t enough, you can upgrade to one of the ceramic variants, which will give you 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage space.

the braggadocious model) features 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage!

A larger phone also implies a battery that will last longer on a single charge.

The intelligent battery ensures that you have the power you require when you require it by learning about your behaviors and changing accordingly to meet your needs.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Size Comparison Chart: All Models, All Sizes

Even in 2021, the Samsung Galaxy S10 continues to be a highly popular smartphone. Is there a significant physical difference between all of the Galaxy S10 model sizes, though? The Samsung Galaxy S10 series of smartphones is comprised of three models: the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy S10e. The Samsung Galaxy S10, the Samsung Galaxy S10e, and the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus (or Galaxy S10+, as it is commonly referred as) are the three flagship devices from the company. In addition, each model has a varied size to it.

Everything you need to know about the sizes of Samsung’s Galaxy S10 models, from the largest to the tiniest, is contained inside this document.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Size Comparison Table

Clearly, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is the biggest phone in the Galaxy S10 family, as seen by its size. It boasts a 6.4-inch AMOLED display and is the greatest choice for people who watch a lot of video content on their phones. The Galaxy S10 Plus has a huge footprint as well, with measurements of 157.6 x 74.1 x 7.8 mm and a thickness of 7.8 mm. The Galaxy S10+ is also the most technologically sophisticated of the three phones in the Samsung Galaxy S10 lineup, with the most modern specifications, hardware, and camera modules.

As a direct competitor to Apple’s iPhone XS Max, it was priced approximately the same as the company’s flagship device at the time of its debut.

What is The Smallest Galaxy S10 Model?

The Samsung Galaxy S10e is the most compact of the Samsung Galaxy S10 models. Aside from that, the Galaxy S10e is one of the greatest little Android phones available on the market – small Android phones in general, and particularly good ones, are hard to come by. Many people were upset when Samsung did not update it in 2020 or 2021, as they had expected. In terms of size, the Galaxy S10e features a 5.8-inch OLED display and, because to its buttonless design, it is quite compact – around the same size as Apple’s iPhone 12 Mini (OK, it’s a little bigger than that phone, but not much).

How Much is The Samsung Galaxy S10 In 2021?

This model has been succeeded by the Samsung Galaxy S20 and, more recently, the Samsung Galaxy S21series of smartphones. This is excellent news for anybody planning to purchase a Galaxy S10 in 2021, as the devices are now significantly less expensive. How much less expensive is it? Well, if you go with Verizon, you can get a certified pre-owned Galaxy S10+ for just $414.99, which is a fantastic deal considering the specifications. If you want a smaller device, you can get the Galaxy S10e for as little as $24.99 per month if you choose for that option (over 24 months).

Once again, this is a fantastic deal for a fantastic phone.

They are therefore completely future-proof, and if you’re looking for a terrific value smartphone, the Galaxy S10 – or any of the variants – is impossible not to suggest in this situation.

Is The Galaxy S10 Still Worth Buying?

Even in 2021, I believe there is a compelling case to be made for purchasing any of Samsung’s Galaxy S10 smartphones. The primary attraction is the price, which has been drastically reduced on all of the phones. Buying an approved pre-owned model (which you shouldn’t hesitate to do because they are as excellent as new) will save you even more money, so it’s worth exploring your options. The Galaxy S10, which costs less than $400, is outstanding value for money. When you combine this with the fact that you have the option to purchase a 5G edition of both the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10 Plus, you’ll be well-prepared for the next several years in terms of technology.

I can easily see why so many people are still really interested in purchasing a Galaxy S10 in 2021, based on the information presented above.

A BATTERY DRAIN FOR THE FLAGSHIP! What is the point of having features loaded into a device that is limited by battery power? Posted by Ameya Nagarkar on Gadgets 360 on April 4, 2019. I’ve been using S10 since the 8th of March, 2019. With usual usage, i.e. without the device inserted, the battery lasts just 8 hours.
