Galaxy S9 vs. Galaxy S9 Plus: What’s the difference?

Samsung’sGalaxy S9is now available for purchase – and you might like what you see. Perhaps you’re in the market for a new phone right now, for example. It is worth noting that there are two models to pick from: the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus. What makes you think you’d choose one over the other? Size

It should come as no surprise that the Galaxy S9 Plus is larger than the standard Galaxy S9, which may make it a more appealing option for those who like a bigger screen or have larger hands. The Galaxy S9 Plus features a bigger screen than the Galaxy S9, with a diagonal of 6.2 inches, compared to the Galaxy S9’s 5.8-inch diagonal. Both screens have the same 2,960×1,440-pixel resolution. Furthermore, while both smartphones have the same thickness – 8.5mm, or approximately a third of an inch – the S9 Plus’s body is somewhat bigger as well.

Of course, bigger does not always equate to better in this case.

All of this was also true of last year’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus – in contrast to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, which had a curved screen on one and a flat screen on the other.

Camera

This is the most important one. The Galaxy S9 Plus features two cameras on the rear, however the standard Galaxy S9 does not have two cameras on the back. The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus both have Samsung’s fancy new 12-megapixel dual-aperture camera (which lets in more light by adjusting the size of the phone’s iris, similar to a DSLR), but only the Galaxy S9 Plus has an additional 12-megapixel camera with a 2x telephoto lens for getting closer to your subject.

Battery

Want a phone that will last you the entire day? The Galaxy S9 Plus features a significantly larger battery than the normal Galaxy S9, with a 3,500mAh capacity as opposed to the 3,000mAh capacity of the regular model. Yes, the larger screen consumes part of the battery life, but when we compared the Galaxy S8 Plus with the Galaxy S8 last year, we found that we had two hours more battery life on the Galaxy S8 Plus. Additionally, the S9 has some of Samsung’s other hardware staples, like as quick wired and wireless charging, IP68 water resistance, and a 3.5mm headphone port, among other things.

Samsung introduced a dedicated button for its Bixby virtual assistant on the Galaxy S8 last year, and the button remains in the same location on the S9, right below the volume keys on the left side.

While it might be irritating, it can also serve as a useful fidget button that you can push without having to worry about it doing anything.

It now has the ability to physically switch between an extremely bright F/1.5 aperture and a smaller F/2.4 aperture, similar to how larger cameras work.

Samsung promises that the new camera will provide considerable improvements in low-light performance, due to a redesigned lens that can catch more light and enhanced signal processing that will minimize image noise.

The photographs are less noisy than those captured by the S8, and the colors are nice.

It produces images that are significantly different from those produced by Apple’s or Google’s cameras, and picking between them is frequently a matter of personal choice.

If you weren’t a fan of Samsung’s image processing in the past, the chances are good that you won’t like it anymore.

It has the appearance of a parlor trick rather than anything else.

As a result, I’m not sure why I’d ever use an f/2.4 lens when an f/1.5 lens is available, especially because the camera can simply raise its shutter speed to accommodate for extra light.

The option to change apertures is tempting, and the idea behind it is good from a photography standpoint.

It also provides greater creative freedom, allowing you to create long exposure effects or to distinguish your subject from the backdrop.

As a result of my testing, I have concluded that there is no discernible difference in sharpness between the two apertures.

Furthermore, the amount of aperture adjustment available is insufficient for sophisticated photographic methods, such as long-exposure photographs taken during the day, necessitating the use of additional equipment.

The image quality is also subpar in difficult lighting conditions.

When it comes to video, the S9 can record 4K footage at 60 frames per second or 1080p slow-motion video at 240 frames per second, which puts it on par with the iPhone’s capabilities.

Things have remained the same as they were with the front camera from last year.

Autofocus, which no other front camera has yet to match, although the portrait mode and image quality aren’t quite as excellent as that of Google or Apple.

The design, performance, and cameras of the Galaxy S9 are all expected to be excellent, ensuring that it remains at the top of the smartphone heap in 2018.

Surprisingly, the things that don’t work are almost often associated with software.

When it scans your face, it creates a 3D Bitmoji-looking character based on 100 points on your face that is somewhat similar to you and may even appear to be you on rare occasions.

Aside from that, there are several bizarre-looking creatures with which you can make video clips, similar to what you can do with Animoji.

First and foremost, because Samsung isn’t employing any unique technology to record your face or motions, it is just depending on the front or rear camera, which results in poor tracking.

The animal personas are also bizarre in their own way.

The camera’s new Super Slow Motion mode is the next feature to mention.

That sounds fantastic, but the S9 can only do it for 0.2 seconds at a time (which may be stretched to six seconds when played back) and at a resolution of just 720 pixels per inch.

It took us ten tries to acquire a slow-motion photo of my six-year-old tossing a snowball before we gave up.

Even worse, the feature requires a great deal of light to function well, and even if you have enough of light, the image quality is still poor.

However, while it has received a facelift and is marginally quicker than previously, it is still significantly slower than Google Assistant and is not as effective at processing my voice instructions.

(Neither of these features is anything I anticipate people using on a regular basis.) At this point, it’s fair to say that Bixby has proven to be a colossal failure as a smartphone assistant.

It has two email applications, two gallery apps, two browsers, and both app stores on the unlocked S9 that I’m now testing.

A number of Samsung’s applications are excellent — particularly, the Samsung browser and Samsung Pay — but the majority of the company’s apps are inferior to the Google apps that are also loaded on the phone, which only serves to make them irritating.

As of the time of this review, the Galaxy S8 from last year is still running Android 8.0 in the United States, despite the fact that it was published by Google more than six months ago.

Ultimately, you can overlook Samsung’s marketing-focused gimmicks and have a very enjoyable experience with the Galaxy S9 (and none of them are on the same level as other Android manufacturers’ software issues).

That leaves Samsung’s dismal track record with software updates as the major source of contention for many consumers.

It has a striking design, is lightning quick, has a fantastic screen, and has a very outstanding camera.

Owners of the Galaxy S8 are unlikely to need to upgrade this time around because the differences aren’t significant enough to justify spending the extra money on the S9.

Under the hood, the S9 has received a number of enhancements, including Qualcomm’s latest processor (in North America; other markets will have Samsung’s own Exynos processor), 4GB (S9) or 6GB (S9 Plus) of RAM, and a new LTE modem that supports even faster gigabit speeds.

Overall performance has been excellent during my review period: the phone is snappy and responsive, with smooth scrolling and quick app launches, and the camera is sharp and responsive.

There is no change in the size of the battery or internal storage: you get a 3,000mAh battery in the S9 and a 3,500mAh battery in the S9 Plus, as well as 64GB of internal storage and microSD card support in both devices.

Even though these phones have good battery life, it is only average, and heavy users will quickly deplete even the S9 Plus’ large battery after a long day of usage.

Even though the 12-megapixel image sensor has been upgraded and improved to include better image processing capabilities, it’s the lens that has undergone the most significant change.

Similar to the Note 8, the S9 Plus model includes a second camera for zooming and portrait mode effects, which was first introduced with the Note 8.

In my experience, the Galaxy S9 can take excellent low-light photos, but they aren’t always superior to the images captured by the Google Pixel 2 or even the iPhone X in most situations.

When it comes to virtually any situation, I’d rather have a faster shutter speed or a lower ISO setting than a slightly smaller aperture.

Controlling the aperture on a larger camera may result in sharper images or better exposure in bright lighting conditions.

The assumption that larger camera lenses are equivalent to smaller camera lenses and sensors does not apply to the small lenses and sensors found in a phone.

Compared to one another, there are only minor differences.

Because the S9’s small lens and sensor already have extremely deep depths of field, reducing the aperture has only a minimal effect on what is in focus when shooting with it.

The second telephoto lens on the S9 Plus is also a bit of a novelty: While Samsung’s Live Focus portrait mode performs admirably in low-light settings, it falls short of Apple’s or Google’s in terms of separating a subject from the backdrop.

A larger screen and longer battery life are two reasons to choose the Galaxy S9 Plus over the S9, but the second camera lens isn’t one of them!

These two video modes should be available on all Android flagship phones this year, according to my predictions.

While the price of the Galaxy S10 Plus is significantly higher, the reality is that the Galaxy S9 can now be purchased for less than $600, and this is before the Galaxy S10 goes on sale, which will certainly result in the price of the Galaxy S9 dropping even more. Having said that, if you pre-order the Galaxy S10 before it comes on March 8, Samsung will include a free set of Galaxy Buds, which are a $130 AirPod competitor and are being promoted as such. Anyone on a tight budget would be wise to hold their ground and wait for the Galaxy S9 pricing to go below $500 in the coming months, if possible.
