What to expect from Samsung in 2015

With the New Year, comes new technology. 2015 is already looking like a big year for Samsung, with both huge challenges and vast opportunities for the tech giant. Here’s a quick look at what to expect from Samsung in 2015…

What to expect from Samsung in 2015: A new family of Samsung smartphones

In keeping with its tradition of producing a vast number of smartphones to satisfy every niche market, Samsung seems set to introduce a new family of smartphones in 2015. The brand new E series will include the Galaxy E7 and the Galaxy E5 and closely emulate the design of the A series, targeting the mid-range market.

The E7 will reportedly be the bigger of the two devices, boasting a 5.5 inch screen with 720p HD display resolution, a 13 megapixel rear camera and 5 megapixel front camera, 16GB of storage space and Android 5.0 Lollipop. The more understated and affordable E5 is expected to have a 5 inch screen, although it will have the same display quality as the E7. At 7.2mm, it is also likely to be slightly thicker than its sibling in the E series, which is expected to be rolled out globally after its initial release into the Chinese market.

The launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6

The launch of the Galaxy S6 is a highly anticipated development at Samsung in 2015. Following the S5’s muted response from consumers and reviewers, Samsung will be looking to bounce back with the latest in its flagship S series of smartphones.

The cheap plastic material used in the design of the S5 was one of its main drawbacks, and therefore Samsung is likely to launch the S6 with the premium metal styling used for the Samsung Galaxy Alpha and the Galaxy Note 4. It is also expected to have a 2560 x 1440p QHD display and appears set to run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 or 810, offering superior power in comparison to the S5. With stronger battery management, camera improvement, more RAM and other software tweaks also anticipated, the release of the Samsung Galaxy S6 is something for Samsung geeks to look forward to in the New Year.

The consensus is that it will be launched at the Mobile World Congress in February, although there are rumours that the launch could be brought forward to CES 2015 in Las Vegas a month earlier.

The unveiling of the Tizen TV

One new product that we definitely will see at CES 2015 is the Tizen TV, which Kim Hyun-suk, Samsung’s head of visual display, has promised will be at the popular annual global electronics and technology trade show.

Following setbacks in the launch of a Tizen smartphone, the operating system has been used to power the Gear 2 and Gear S smartwatches. As well as seeking to finally release a Tizen smartphone, Samsung wants to incorporate its innovative home-grown operating system into more of its technological products, which explains why we will get to see the Tizen TV for the first time at CES 2015.

So, what can we expect from Samsung in 2015?

In sum, expect Samsung to release a new family of smartphones and an improved version of its flagship smartphone with the launch of the E series and the Samsung Galaxy S6 in 2015, probably at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, but possibly a month earlier at CES 2015 in Las Vegas. Also anticipate the arrival of the Tizen TV as Samsung seeks to overcome issues with and expand the use of its home grown operating system.
